Andokides' Porch

When the people sat around on the porch and passed around the pictures of their thoughts for the others to look at and see, it was nice. The fact that the thought pictures were always crayon enlargements of life made it even nicer to listen to. -- Zora Neale Hurston

In June, I went camping with members of my gay men’s outdoors group at Tallulah Gorge. (For photos from that trip, click here.)We did the hike to the bottom of the gorge, one of the most demanding hikes I’ve ever made, especially the climb back up via the “45º trail.” In October a group of us returned for an afternoon hike and for the opportunity t see the full moon rise right in the middle of the gorge. It was a beautiful, crisp, clear fall day. The rising of the moon was, in my opinion, pretty much a bust. The moon rose, but not in the middle of the gorge and not against anything that provided pictorial interest. Nor was the ranger leading the group interested in providing much time for photographic experiments. But the afternoon portion of the hike was beautiful, and the camaraderie was, as it always is with this group, wonderful.
