Andokides' Porch

When the people sat around on the porch and passed around the pictures of their thoughts for the others to look at and see, it was nice. The fact that the thought pictures were always crayon enlargements of life made it even nicer to listen to. -- Zora Neale Hurston

My friend Dan was organizing another trip to P'town for August and invited me to join the group. It sounded like fun; it was between summer school and fall semester; I had taught summer school and owed myself a little break.

I arrived in Boston around 3:30 in the afternoon and caught the 6:30 "fast ferry" to P'town. I arrived in P'town at about 8 o'clock; the boys were already out on the town, so I had the luxury, after a long day of travel, of a quiet evening, catching a bite of supper at The Lunchbox (thoroughly mediocre), and settling in.

The afternoon was clear and beautiful, and we spent it strolling down Commercial St, exploring the tourist shops. I walked on to Pilgrim Point to see where the Pilgrims landed before heading across the bay to Plymouth, a site I did not have the chance to visit on my first trip to P'town.

Monday was beach day. My friend Gregory and I made the long hike out to the gay end of the beach where the terrain was rocky, and the water was cold.

After shopping, we went out to the harbor in Wellfleet for lunch at The Pearl, where I had maybe the most delicious lobster roll I've ever had.

Thursday, Gregory suggested something more (inter)active than lying on the beach, so we settled on renting kayaks and paddling across a inlet of the bay to the North Point lighthouse and beach. Here, we saw the only seals of our trip, but thankfully, no sharks. (It had been an active shark season, with warnings posted for other areas along the coast.)

Friday was my day to head back—airfares made a Saturday departure unaffordable—so I stayed close to home, walking over to climb the Pilgrim monument before having lunch and getting my packing finished to head back to the ferry. The views from the top of the monument were worth the 618 stair-climb.
